This one is from 2008 and features a "polar bear" and dramatic music. (The music had me wondering if things might turn for the worse even after the capture.) The Zoo does one of these rather odd drills each year. Last year it was a zebra. The two-person papier-mache "rhino" was a favorite of mine. And there was a tiger one year. And a large chimpanzee another.

Haematomyzus elephantis (the elephant louse) is a specialist. You'll only find it on elephants (African and Asian). So it is endangered simply because elephants are. Everything in nature is connected to everything else, they say, but this connection is *most* clear.
Poachers and African elephants are dying at increased rates in Cameroon as the prices being paid for ivory escalate. The NC Zoo's Dr. Mike Loomis is back to Cameroon to continue his ongoing mission on behalf of elephants and the good people of Western Africa.
