2020 Science [
Syndication ] [
Claim this blog ]
2020 Science focuses on the relationships between science, technology and society, with a heavy bias toward emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, synthetic biology and geoengineering. As a personal and independent blog, it covers stuff that grabs my interest or gets my goat - especially in my professional areas of risk science, science policy and communication/engagement. As a result, I spend quite a lot of time exploring how to make sense of science and technology in a complex and not entirely rational society.

I write mostly about the science of religion for non-scientist readers. This might include summaries of psychological research on how people behave when they think God is watching them, anthropological work on local religious traditions, demographic research on which religions have the most babies, or any number of other topics. Of course, “religion” is hard to isolate from all of the other things we humans do, so these posts will be accompanied by commentary on how all of this academic work helps us understand everyday social interaction. I also hope to apply scientific research to understanding current events.

I’ve owned about half a dozen telescopes, done public out reach, built my own observatory, and operated the 16-scope and the University of Arizonas’ Flandreau Observatory. I’ve also contributed variable and meteor observing data. I started this blog in response to the huge interest I see in the general public, as well as some of the mis-conceptions I’ve heard.

Welcome to Buried Treasure, my blog on computational biology. I am a computational biologist who tends to work on way too many projects at any one time. Many of these result in observations that I find interesting - but not interesting enough to bother writing up a manuscript and sending it to a peer-reviewed journal. In other cases the results were simply negative and no conclusions could be drawn. My disk may thus contain "buried treasure". I use this blog to make my never-to-be-published observations openly available. As I don't plan on continuing these projects, anyone is welcome to pick up a project and continue where I left off. I also plan on reporting negative results on this blog so that others can hopefully avoid repeating analyses that would lead them nowhere.

But you know what? Who the heck cares?
I just want to prove that I can write for the public.
And that, no doubt, will take some work.

Eight Crayon Science is a blog about science written primarily for non-scientists that discusses a wide range of topics, with a focus on physical and environmental science. Scientific knowledge should be accessible to everyone, so this blog focuses on communicating the fundamental ideas underpinning the science that affects our everyday lives in ordinary English and hand-drawn pictures.
Eight Crayon Science is not about jargon, obscure details, or pages of formulas and mathematics. It’s about the fundamental ideas underpinning the science that affects our everyday lives. It’s about communicating those ideas, discoveries, and theories in a way that’s clear, honest, and hopefully accessible. It’s about fostering a dialogue about science that everyone, not just specialists and scientists, can participate in comfortably — and I hope you do!

Exploring any form of life with a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles, eukaryography functions as a space for mediations and extrapolations of those things eukaryotic and the associations they spawn. Short- and long-form essays are the project’s main focus, but excerpts from literature and research papers fill the space between and add content for further exploration.

I’m a student of Medieval English Language and Literature at Oxford University with a special interest in the intersections of science and the sound-arts: poetry and music.

These areas, which elucidate our understanding of how the human brain perceives art, also significantly inform my own poetry and music.
Along with any promotion of science’s place in the arts, I think it is also important to debunk popular opinions that are antagonistic to science having a place at all.

I'm Michael Lugo. I have a PhD in mathematics from Penn and currently teach statistics at Berkeley, although this blog reflects my views and not the views of my employer. This blog is the reincarnation of the old God Plays Dice, and is about mathematics, not anything to do with religion. The name is my answer to a quote of Einstein in a letter to Max Born: \"Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory says a lot, but does not really bring us any closer to the secret of the 'old one.' I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice.\"

I am Dick Lipton, a Professor of Computer Science at Georgia Tech. I have worked in the area of theory of computation since 1973. I find the whole area exciting and want to share some of that excitement with you. I hope that these blogs inform and entertain you. I hope that you not only learn some new ideas, hear some interesting open problems, but also get some of the history of the area. One of the things I think people sometimes forget is that research is done by people. One of my goals-perhaps the main one-is to get you to be able to see behind the curtain and understand how research works.\n\n\n\nI am Ken Regan, also in Computational Complexity Theory at the University at Buffalo (SUNY). I have been delighted to help this blog since mid-2009, and now honored to join the masthead as an author. I have shared the same values and desires as Dick mentions-also attending to the personal side-and have found the partnership congenial as well as collegial.

This is a blog about sexy groupers going on a honeymoon.
The honeymoon, a reef fish spawning aggregation, is one of the most breathtaking shows in nature.
Once a year, most reef fishes aggregate at only a few sites of the reef to spawn. Spawning is linked to the moon cycle.
Hundreds to thousands of fish (depending on the species) swim in a synchronized ballet under a moonlit ocean, until males and females spawn en masse, releasing the next generation of baby fish into the ocean currents.
Worldwide, 80 % of known reef fish spawning aggregations are overfished, and 20 % of them have been fished to extinction.
This blog focuses on research and conservation of reef fish spawning aggregations, specially those of large-bodied groupers.

iNSolution [

Claim this blog ]
This is Northeastern University’s first ever research blog. We’re calling it iNSolution because that’s what our faculty and student researchers are in the business of — finding solutions to societal problems while simultaneously contributing to the fundamental knowledge base of their respective fields.
I am Northeastern University’s first ever official science writer (at least in the communications office). This blog was my idea and I’m starting to wonder what I’ve gotten myself into — there’s so much going on around this campus among so many brilliant minds that I’m a bit nervous about keeping up with the pace.
Before coming to Northeastern I was a freelance science writer and a chemical technician at a small nanotechnology company. In college I majored in chemistry and literature with a focus in poetry. I could never decide between the two seemingly disparate fields. Turns out I didn’t have to.
Northeastern research is at a very exciting point in its growth. I’m honored to have the job of telling its story. But I’m going to need your help — send me your ideas and endeavors, your questions, compliments, and complaints. Comment on the posts — be a part of the conversation.
Inspiring Science [
Syndication ] [
Claim this blog ]
This blog isn’t just about cutting-edge or peer-reviewed research; I write about whatever I think might be interesting, which also includes older research and simple explanations of things that might be considered “basic science”. My goal is to communicate scientific ideas to non-scientists in a way that is enlightening, engaging or even inspirational. I hope the blog will be more than just my writing, though – discussion and discourse are the heart of learning, so please share your thoughts and questions in the comments.
A better understanding of science is important for everyone. Since most scientific research is publicly funded, scientists need the public to understand the value of their work. A scientifically educated and aware public is more likely to do so and to be willing to extend or expand support for science. For non-scientists, a better understanding of science can help make more informed and effective choices on both a personal and a social level. From GMOs to climate change to stem cell research, we are struggling together to regulate the decisions we make and to understand their effects. While science alone cannot determine our choices, they must be based in a firm understanding of science.
The world around us is richly mysterious, full of dazzling wonders and dizzying complexity. Science is how we try to capture that numinous whole in beautiful, elegant explanations and simple ideas. Each advance is a small wonder in its own right and science communication should reflect that sentiment. At its best, it should do more than just explain. It should impart a sense of majesty and beauty; it should inspire us to keep asking questions and to strive for understanding. I was lucky enough to grow up in just such an atmosphere; I hope that I can pass on some small part of that richness.
